Re: (erielack) Remains of the EL west of Marion, Ohio?(2)

Fred,
I can provide a little insight into what's left in Ohio from Marion west:

The 'old' e/b main in Marion Yard, along with several other yard tracks, are
now used by CSX as yard trackage. Track is in for nearly 1.5 miles west of
Kenton Ave. to the west end of the yard to the Little Scioto River creek
which runs underneath. Here, a wooden trestle carried 4 tracks across the
creek, and at the west end of the trestle, tracks end here...

CSX has two tail tracks at the west end of Marion Yard, with several
remaining tracks owned by Union Tank Car (although unused for many years),
that uses the old Marion Shop for tank car repair/rehab. Much of the east
end of Marion yard remains in service today...

From Marion west thru DeCliff & Hepburn to just east of Kenton, track is
gone - roadbed remains, although efforts are underway to put in a trail from
just west of Marion yard westward.

At Kenton, diamonds over the old T&OC (today CSX's Scottslawn Secondary) at
old KN Towere were removed by CR some years back, and switches installed to
connect to the EL both e/b and w/b to service some of the few local
industries (although the only thing I've seen on recent trips has been
covered hoppers for a large grain elevator just south of KN on the
Scottslawn Sec.) Track is in place for about a mile both east and west of
KN. HN Tower (which controlled the interlocking at KN) was torn down by CR,
as was the ex-NYC Big Four branch that crossed there.

From Kenton westward thru McCuffey & Harrods into Lima, and across the
diamonds SJ Tower (where the old DT&I (today operated by the Indiana &
Ohio)) and at 'Erie Crossing' w/CSX's ex-B&O Toledo Subdivision and an NS
branch, are out to about 1/8 mile west of old Erie Crossing. Here, rail was
connected from the old N&W/NS yard to connect to the EL (today the yard and
N&W/NS trackage south of here to St.Marys is operated by RJCorman).

EL track from here westward thru Spencerville & Elgin to Ohio City is owned
by the Allen County and Van Wert County Port Authority, with RJ Corman as
designated operator. RJC operates only as far west as Spencerville, and
usually only during grain season.

Unfortunately, the Port Authorities in Allen and Van Wert County are seeking
to abandon most of this remaining stretch of the EL due to low
car-loadings...

Although track is in from Spencerville to just west of Ohio City, it hasn't
seen any traffic for some years...
