Re: (erielack) DL&W, Kearny Jct 1960s-1970s

Jim,

PRR Interlocking diagrams for Waldo "Cabin" (last revised 1-1-68) reveal
WB freight trains could diverge from the P&H Branch @ Switch #35 and
pass through Journal Square using the PATH Storage Track. This route

avoids having to pass by PATH station platforms and any double-slip

switches. For further details, please refer to PRR Interlocking Diagrams
that are available on the internet.

Regards,

Bill Sheppard

There were freight and customers at Exchange Placesuch as Colgate, so I suspect those Jersey City-bound freights are what yousaw. I remain doubtful that the PRR would route freight through Track 5 atJournal Square bound for Harsimus Cove – because that would also send a GG1through switches that were prohibited for such movements atWaldo.

It could be done through the trailing point crossoversthere – pulling east of Waldo and backing across four tracks including theH&M to get to the P&H – those crossovers used to get from the P&Hto/from the NJ Junction heading south to the LV, but I don’t think that would bea PRR move even in the middle of the night.

I was about to say the Penn Central might have triedthat (they tried freight through Penn Station, you’ll recall), but then Iremembered that with the exception of the crossovers to get from the P&H tothe LV, the Jersey City Branch was out of service for PRR trains after theAldene Plan went into effect

But Jersey City customers certainly had daily freighttrains via the Jersey City Branch.

Cheers,

Jim
