Re: (erielack) Grain in Boxcars

Note the 2nd car, between the two box cars, is a coal hopper with a plastic top allowing it to carry grain. One of the reason box car shipments where still being made in the 1980's was the lack of 100 ton covered hopper grain cars. This resulted in some hopper hoppers having a plastic or maybe fiberglass top put on them to allow them to be used to transport grain. I think a fabric sheet was put into the pockets before loading to keep the grain from leaking out of the door pockets. Once their was enough grain hoppers in the fleet by the mid 1980's these cars returned back to open top hoppers. A temporary stop gap measure.
