Paul and all,
Here's the story on the "Mystery critter". One night while hanging with some freinds we heard a westbound Conrail freight call Hoboken on the radio advising the dispatcher that they had a hotbox. The dispatcher advised they set the Locomotive off at Great Notch yard. We watched the freight roll through Upper Montclair with that little switcher in the consist smoking away! We took a ride over to Little Falls and watched them setoff the engine in the yard, for the next week or so all the "Kids" watching trains at Great Notch now had our own engine to climb on, explore and play railroader on as the freights and passenger trains rolled past us. But soon enough, Conrail repaired the problem and the little engine was once again on its way west, to where I do not know?

And here's a photo of that locomotive sitting in the yard at Great Notch, my notes say it was here from April 7th till the 12th 1977. It was owned by the East Jersey Railroad and Transfer Company as their # 17, a GE 65 tonner with a whopping 400 HP. But for a week it was "Owned" by us! LOL

Hi folks,

I'm assembling the Rich Campana presentation for the ELHS Eastern Region
Spring Meeting right now, and this shot caught my eye. It's at (where else?
:) Great Notch, NJ, and in the background can be seen a black
 "critter" in
the yard. The photo is taken in April of 1977. Any thoughts as to what that
unit is?
