Re: (rshsdepot) Lower New York City stations

By nice coincidence with Seth Bramson's 1863 NY & Harlem timetable showing
lower NYC stations in that year, I just received a 1926 New-York Historical
Society Bulletin with an article outlining establishment of stations (or of
stops, anyhow), between City Hall and 42nd St, from 1833 to 1846.

Summarizing:

New York City's First Railroad, The New York and Harlem, 1832 to 1867 -
Joseph Warren Greene, Jr.
N-Y Historical Society Quarterly Bulletin Jan 1926, Vol IX, No. 4

Nov 11 1832- ad - Trains will run Prince Street to 14th Street in the Bowery

Nov 14 1832 - 1st train - Depot near Union Square, along the Bowery

June, 1833 - to Murray Hill

Fall, 1833 - Daily except Sunday from Prince Street at 254 Bowery, the
ticket office, to Murray Hill above the Sun Fish Pond (4th ave & 31st St)

- - purchased six lots, cor. Fourth Ave & 25th St "on which was built an
extensive establishment for the safe keeping of the railroad cars and other
property, with stables for the horses."

June, 1834 - double track complete, Bowery and Prince St. to Yorkville

October 9, 1837 - extended south to Walker Street

July 23, 1838 - Stops at Walker, Grand, Broome, Prince, Bond, 4th, 9th,
18th, 21st, 25th, 28th, 32nd, 42nd, 50th, 61st, 71st, 79th, 86th, 92nd,
109th, 115th, 125th, 133rd Sts.
Also, tracks extended south to City Hall; cars ran up Centre St., to Broome
St., to Bowery and so via Fourth Avenue

June 10, 1839 - Service from Post Office (south of City Hall in City Hall
Park)

July 14, 1839 - Boiler explosion, 4th Ave and 14th St, locomotive "New York"
: "unusual for the locomotive to be so far down town, for ordinarily the
engines did not go below the depot at 32nd Street, where they were replaced
by horses. Only when traffic was too heavy for the horses did the
locomotives run as far as 14th Street, which was the southern limit for
engines in the city."

- - "first definite passenger depot" built at 27th St. and 4th Ave; when
abandoned by the RR, it became pleasure resort "Gilmore's Garden", then was
torn down for 1st Madison Sq Gdn

1846 - large depot at 32nd St and 4th Ave

1869 - 1st Grand Central
