From Photos it looks like the time frame for installing the red nose lights 
was within a year or so of 1949 or 50 . Actually aside from builders fotos, 
pictures of the Freight F units without the nose light are pretty scarce.

In regard to the F3 Nose Mar's light, you are correct they were delivered 
with a white mars light much like fire trucks had.  SP units were the same 
originally . At some point in the early fifties a dual light system was put 
in place, white for warning, red when an emergency brake application was 
made (loss of air) .
