Ben,

At least one (66581) got the gray paint, and reportedly it lasted into
Conrail years. As you can see from the attached photo by Reed Estabrook, it
also appeared to have pool number stencilling, implying it was used in auto
parts service?

Photos of the end-door cars (in either scheme) appear to be quite rare.
There could very well have been others in the gray scheme, but Reed's shot
is the only one I've ever seen.
