The oil tankers were a WWII phenomenon. Wartime needs exceeded the reach and
capacity of the existing pipeline network. We're seeing a similar situation
today in the Bakken shale field of ND and Saskatchewan.

I remember blocks of oil tank cars (GATX,SHPX) eastbound through Mt. 

View 1943-45.   There were also a number of Reading coal loads.  Both 

might well have come off the old main.  Box cars from GN, NP were common 

but likely came across the cutoff.   Don't know about oil as late as 1957.
